About Us

A steady hand in Japan’s evolving markets.

Senjin Capital is a Sydney-based investment manager focused on unlocking the value trapped inside many of Japan’s overlooked small-cap public companies.

Our name Senjin, is a homonym in Japanese, with multiple meanings depicted by different characters when in written form. It reflects how we work: pioneering a forward-looking approach, respecting what came before, carrying out deep research, and taking a long-term perspective.

Senjin: Vanguard, forerunner.

We pioneer a new way

Senjin: Ancestor.

We respect and build on what came before

Senjin: Deep/long/far.

Deep research; in it for the long haul

Our Mission

At Senjin Capital, we aim to deliver strong, sustainable returns for our investors while supporting the revitalisation of Japan’s economy via the ongoing reform of the corporate sector.

What sets us apart.

The first Australian activist manager focused on Japanese equities.

A constructive, collaborative approach that blends deep-value investing with a unique strategy for unlocking that value.

The founders are fully aligned with investors, with significant personal investments in and alongside Fund I.

An accessible Australian unit trust structure suitable for wholesale investors.

At Senjin Capital, we believe in a better balance: seeking to mitigate downside risk through buying at cheap prices relative to stable profits and balance sheets over-capitalised with hard assets, while targeting potentially large upside as reforms and improvements take hold. This philosophy underpins our deep-value constructive activist approach and our role as one of Australia’s few specialist activist investment firms.

What our clients say

Our Team

Meet our founders.

James Halse, CFA

Co-founder, CEO & CIO

Jamie has invested in Japanese equities for more than a decade. At Platinum Asset Management, he was a senior portfolio manager, responsible for ~$1 billion across Platinum’s Japan strategies and a global consumer fund, while leading the Japan and global consumer-sector research teams.

Jamie’s history with Japan goes back to his high school days, and he is still in regular contact with the family who hosted him on his school exchange. Outside of investing, Jamie enjoys exploring Japan’s amazing culinary experiences, and the wonderful snow conditions of Japan’s ski resorts.

Tsubasa (Toby) Umezaki

Co-founder, Managing Director (Japan)

Toby brings extensive experience in constructive activism, mergers & acquisitions, and operational improvement. As a Director in the Japan Engagement Team at Taiyo Pacific Partners, he worked on numerous Japanese companies’ value creation activities, including the execution of a public-to-private transaction, and “on-the-ground” operational improvements of a portfolio company through a long-term secondment.

Toby was born and raised in London in the 1980s-90s, and as a child he witnessed the era when Japanese companies were widely admired globally. His passion lies in supporting Japanese companies to realise their potential and regain their global standing.
